How to equip a small-scale chicken farm for manure management: A cost-effective, three-step approach

While small-scale chicken farms produce a relatively low volume of manure, the waste often has a high moisture content and a strong odor. If not managed properly, it can lead to environmental regulatory pressure and strained relations with neighbors. There is no need to replicate the infrastructure of a large-scale organic fertilizer plant; instead, a three-step process—dewatering, fermentation, and processing—offers a manageable investment with a quick return.
  1. Solid-Liquid Separation
Fresh chicken manure typically has a moisture content of around 80%, which can lead to oxygen deprivation and slow temperature rise during fermentation. A small screw-press solid-liquid separator (with a capacity of 1–3 tons per hour) can reduce the moisture content to approximately 60%. The separated liquid can be stored in a tank for use as diluted irrigation or fed into a biogas digester, while the solid residue proceeds to the fermentation stage. Adding a sewage pump and a basic storage tank requires minimal investment but provides a crucial foundation for subsequent processes.
  1. Fermentation and Composting
For small farms processing a few tons daily, a trough-style fermentation setup with a small-scale trough turner is ideal. Alternatively, for windrow composting, a self-propelled, small-scale windrow compost turning machine—capable of reaching a depth of 0.8–1 meter—is a suitable choice. If capital is limited, a small excavator or manual turning combined with basic aeration can be used, though this will extend the fermentation cycle. Do not skimp on thermometers and moisture meters; these inexpensive tools (costing only a few dozen yuan) are essential for determining when to turn the compost and ensuring successful decomposition.
  1. Value-Added Processing: Powdered Fertilizer First, Granules as Needed
Once the material is fully composted, it should be processed through a semi-wet material crusher, followed by a simple rotary screener. For powdered fertilizer, the product can be packaged directly using a small-scale bagging scale. If granular fertilizer is desired, a flat die press pelleting machine is a great option—it requires a low initial investment, handles the high moisture characteristics of chicken manure well, and produces granules with sufficient hardness. The guiding principle for equipping a small farm is to ensure the setup is functional, durable, and offers a fast return on investment. By following these three steps, chicken manure can be transformed from an environmental liability into a sought-after organic fertilizer for local orchards and vegetable farms.
