Thorough pulverization ensures stable granulation: The synergy between cage crushers and disc granulators
In small-scale organic fertilizer production lines, the combination of a cage crusher and a disc granulator forms a "golden duo" that follows a "fine pulverization first, granulation second" workflow.
Disc granulation is highly sensitive to material fineness: the finer the powder, the greater the specific surface area; this enhances liquid bridge forces upon contact with water, resulting in a higher granulation rate. The cage crusher features an open-cage structure without screens; its high-speed rotating cage bars violently impact compacted, composted material, pulverizing it to particles smaller than 1mm. It handles both dry and wet materials effectively—manure with a moisture content of 20%–45% can be pulverized directly without pre-drying—providing the disc granulator with uniform, fluffy, and fine feedstock.
The core of disc granulation technology is "rolling agglomeration." Inside the tilted, rotating disc, fine powder is moistened by water spray and repeatedly tumbled via centrifugal and frictional forces, causing particles to grow layer by layer. The process generates no heat from mechanical compression, keeping material temperatures stable at 45–55°C—conditions that preserve beneficial bacteria and make the process ideal for bio-organic fertilizer production. The resulting granules are round and smooth, offering an attractive commercial appearance. However, disc granulation has strict moisture requirements: material that is too wet tends to clump into large masses, while material that is too dry fails to form granules.
Successful coordination relies on two key factors: controlling pulverization fineness to ensure uniformity and prevent coarse particles from disrupting granulation, and precisely controlling water spray during granulation to stabilize moisture content between 25% and 35%. If pulverization is too coarse, granule strength suffers and the volume of recycled material increases; if it is too fine, clumping occurs within the disc. Only with a consistent output from the cage pulverizer can the disc granulator continuously produce high-strength granules with a high formation rate.
