One compactor, multiple production lines: Strategies for configuring fertilizer granules compaction machines

A fertilizer granules compaction machines never operates in isolation. By pairing the same double roller or flat die press pelleting machine with different upstream and downstream equipment, one can create vastly different production lines. 1.Extrusion + Spheronization: The Granule "Beautification" Solution Granules produced directly by extrusion often have a somewhat imperfect appearance. Adding a spheronizer allows granules to rub and collide within the drum, smoothing out rough edges and significantly improving roundness. This setup is ideal for compound fertilizer lines where visual appeal is critical; it requires minimal additional investment while offering a marked improvement in appearance. 2.Extrusion + Crushing/Granule Shaping + Closed-Loop Screening: The High-Yield Solution Sheets or strips extruded by the twin-roll machine are broken down by a crushing and shaping unit before entering the screening machine. Fines (undersized particles) and oversized lumps are returned to the extruder via a material return system, creating a closed-loop cycle. With a return rate controlled at 30%–50%, the finished product pass rate can exceed 95%, making this the standard configuration for dry NPK granulation. 3.Extrusion + Coating: The Slow-Release Functionality Solution Adding a coating machine after the screening stage allows for the application of a slow-release coating to the extruded granules. Because extruded granules are dense and have smooth surfaces, they accept coatings more uniformly than wet-granulated products. This configuration is suitable for producing slow-release and controlled-release fertilizers, significantly increasing product value-added. 4.Extrusion + Organic Fertilizer Pre-treatment: The Organic-Inorganic Compound Solution Organic fertilizer raw materials are often fibrous and high in moisture, making direct extrusion into granules difficult. By mixing them with inorganic fertilizers in specific proportions—and subjecting the blend to crushing and drying before extrusion—manufacturers can produce organic-inorganic compound fertilizers. This configuration effectively bridges the gap between organic and inorganic raw material streams. There is no single "correct" answer for fertilizer compactor configuration. Choose closed-loop screening if the material has low moisture content and high nutrient concentration is the goal; add a spheronizer if the material is fibrous and appearance needs improvement; or incorporate a coating machine if the aim is to produce functional fertilizers.
