Bio-organic fertilizer vs. Conventional organic fertilizer: Divergent choices in granulator selection

While both bio-organic and conventional organic fertilizers fall under the same broad category, their core requirements during the granulation stage differ fundamentally: the former prioritizes "microbe preservation," whereas the latter emphasizes "efficiency." This distinction dictates the choice of fertilizer granulator for each production line. The core value of bio-organic fertilizer lies in the activity of its functional microbes. Since the vast majority of these microbes lose viability rapidly at temperatures above 60°C, controlling the granulation temperature is a critical factor for success. Disc granulators operate by rotating an inclined disc at low speeds, causing material to roll into spheres; because this process generates no heat from mechanical compression, the material temperature remains stable within the safe range of 45–55°C. This inherent low-temperature operation makes the disc granulator a "guardian" of microbial viability. It produces smooth, round, and uniformly sized granules with a pelletization rate of 85–95%, resulting in a high-quality commercial product. Its simple structure and low energy consumption make it particularly suitable for small- and medium-sized bio-organic fertilizer plants. Conventional organic fertilizer production does not require microbe preservation; instead, the focus shifts to production capacity and granule strength. The new type stirring tooth-drum granulator employs high-speed rotating teeth to exert intense shearing and throwing forces on the material, rapidly agglomerating the powder into spheres with a pelletization rate of 88–93%. It adapts well to a wide range of moisture contents, making it especially suitable for processing livestock manure with moisture levels of 55–65% post-fermentation—potentially eliminating the need for a pre-drying step. The resulting granules offer superior density and compressive strength compared to those from disc granulators, making this equipment ideal for large-scale, continuous production. The starting point for equipment selection is a single question: Does the product contain live microbes? If it does, the low-temperature process of the disc granulator is a mandatory requirement; if not, the new stirring tooth-drum granulator wins out due to its higher capacity and granule strength. Process logic dictates equipment logic; this is the fundamental dividing line in granulator selection for these two types of production lines.
