Pitfalls to avoid when applying organic fertilizer to fruits and vegetables
Organic fertilizer is an excellent nutrient source for fruit and vegetable cultivation; however, improper application can range from reduced effectiveness to severe root burn and seedling damage. Keep the following points in mind:
1.Ensure Full Decomposition
Applying undecomposed organic fertilizer causes secondary fermentation in the soil, generating high temperatures and organic acids that can scorch root systems. Additionally, the presence of insect eggs, pathogens, and weed seeds can trigger soil-borne diseases. Standards for decomposition include: the material turns dark brown, is odorless and loose in texture, and the pile temperature drops to ambient levels.
2.Control Application Rates
Although organic fertilizers release nutrients slowly, excessive application leads to salt accumulation—a particular concern for soils used in continuous greenhouse cropping. Generally, a basal application rate of 2–4 cubic meters per mu is appropriate; reduce the amount for sandy soils and slightly increase it for clay soils.
3.Apply Deeply and Cover with Soil
Surface broadcasting leads to nitrogen volatilization and significant nutrient loss. The correct approach is to apply the fertilizer in furrows or planting holes, covering it with 5–10 cm of soil to ensure optimal contact between the fertilizer and the root zone.
4.Tailor to the Crop
Leafy vegetables require high nitrogen levels, making high-nitrogen organic fertilizers like chicken manure suitable choices. Fruiting vegetables require more phosphorus and potassium; sheep or cattle manure combined with plant ash is ideal. Root and tuber crops prefer loose soil conditions, making fibrous fertilizers like cattle manure particularly suitable.
The high-quality organic fertilizer production process is straightforward: mix livestock manure with crop straw and mushroom residue to achieve a carbon-to-nitrogen (C/N) ratio of 25–30:1; adjust the moisture content to 55%–65%; pile the mixture into fermentation tanks; use a organic fertilizer compost turning machine to aerate the pile regularly; maintain a high fermentation temperature of 55–65°C for 7–15 days; and finally, allow it to mature before crushing and screening.
